Manage public speaking anxiety

Welcome. My guess is you're here because you have a speech to make, or a presentation coming up, and you're feeling anxious about it.

And perhaps that feeling of anxiety is very familiar. Every time you have to speak in public you become fearful.

If we could live stream what's going on in our mind and body we'd see and hear something like this:  

I have a presentation to make! (This is the cause or the trigger.)

And this is the effect or response.

My heart is beating faster. My breath becomes shallow and rapid.

My mind is swamped with negative thoughts about making a complete fool of myself. My voice squeaks. My knees knock. My mind goes blank. I blush. I hear myself  babble and blurt. I go hot. Then I go cold. I feel faint.

Finally I stumble away from the audience swearing to myself I will never, ever try to speak in public again. 

Next shame kicks in and I feel small, silly and stupid, once more.  Other people talk easily and confidently in public. Why not me?

The cumulative impact of repeated experiences of fear 

The sense of failure and feeling like an idiot after being swamped by public speaking fear adds to the pressure we feel and, to the viciousness of the circle. The next time giving a presentation comes around the fear is even stronger. Sadly, it builds up and compounds.

This because of our past negative experiences of speaking in public have been effectively lock-stepped* with manifestations of fear and dread.  They belong together - an association that is intensified and reinforced each time we are called on to speak in front of others.
